The use of a steel framework in the building’s interior — a complete novelty at the time of the original construction — provides the ideal conditions for the luxurious redesign of the office floor plans. Elaborate cast-iron work on the lifts and banisters, richly ornamented stucco ceilings and myriad features wrought in similarly dignified materials have survived virtually undamaged in many parts of the building to convey a tangible sense of early twentieth-century splendour.
